Lead scoring

Lead scoring is a method of ranking prospects by how likely they are to buy, using fit and behavior signals, so teams focus on the best leads first.

Why it matters

Not every lead is worth the same effort, and reps only have so many hours. Lead scoring puts the most promising prospects at the top, so time goes to the leads most likely to convert rather than whoever came in last. It also keeps sales and marketing aligned on what a good lead actually is, which smooths the handoff between them.

How it works in practice

Scoring combines fit, how well a lead matches the Ideal Customer Profile, with behavior, the actions that signal interest such as visits, replies, or demo requests. Each factor carries a weight, and the totals rank leads or sort them into tiers. The model is tuned over time against which leads actually closed, so the score stays connected to real outcomes.

Common mistakes

A common mistake is scoring on behavior alone, so an engaged but poor-fit lead ranks too high. Another is setting the weights once and never revisiting them against closed-won data. A third is over-engineering the model into something no one trusts or maintains.

How hubsell approaches it

hubsell provides accurate fit data and surfaces interest signals for each contact, so the inputs to a lead score reflect who the account really is and what they are doing now.
